Scallop Shell Acanthus Wing Onlay

A fluted shell fanning open between two sweeps of acanthus — the classic centrepiece that dresses a doorway or mirror crest. At the heart of this appliqué sits a deeply carved scallop shell, its ribs radiating out from a tight fluted hinge and spreading into a scalloped, wavy lower edge. A small palmette bud crowns the top of the shell, and from behind it two mirror-image acanthus leaves peel away like wings, curling and folding as they reach toward the outer tips. The carving is generous and rounded, with real depth between the leaf lobes and shell flutes, so it throws confident shadows even under soft light. This is a horizontal furniture and architectural onlay — the kind of piece fixed above a cabinet door, at the crest of a mirror or headboard, on a mantel frieze, or centred on a drawer front to lift plain joinery into something period and considered. Print notes: • Print face-up flat; the curled leaf tips have undercuts, so add light supports there or angle slightly if your printer struggles with overhangs. • Resin captures the flute-and-vein detail best, but a fine FDM nozzle (0.2 mm or smaller) also does it justice. • The piece is mirror-symmetrical, so it centres easily on any panel. • On a CNC, use a tapered ball-nose to reach into the flutes; finish with a stain wipe to pool colour in the recesses and pop the ribs.
