Scrolled Shell Cartouche Onlay

A scalloped shell fans out at the centre while acanthus scrolls unspool to either side. This is a long, horizontal onlay, the kind of piece that runs along the apron of a table, the top rail of a door, or above a doorway as an overdoor. The middle is dominated by a ribbed shell or palmette that spreads like an open fan, and from its base two symmetrical wings of foliage flow outward, each dissolving into tight rolled C-scrolls and feathery leaf sprays before tapering to a fine curled tail. The rhythm is classic Rococo: busy and sculptural at the centre, lighter and more linear as it reaches the ends. Cabinetmakers and sign carvers use runs like this to break up wide, flat expanses; it also machines well as a standalone over-mantel ornament. Cut notes • The wide format may exceed a small bed, so check your work area or split into left, centre and right tiles and butt-join. • Rough with a ball nose, then finish the scroll cores with a 1 to 2 mm tapered ball to reach the deep spiral eyes. • Orientation: flat, single-sided, plain back for mounting. • Finish: paint-and-glaze or a rubbed wax both work beautifully, and the raised shell ribs love a highlight. Stretch or compress the length to fit your rail; the central shell stays proportional as the wings extend.
