Description

A rippling shell fan flanked by outswept acanthus scrolls — a Baroque crest for the centre of things. This CNC appliqué is all about symmetry. A fluted shell, or palmette, blooms in the middle, its ribs fanning down into a scrolled foot, while pairs of acanthus fronds sweep out left and right, each rolling into a little curled bud at the tip. The silhouette spreads like open wings — wider than it is tall — which makes it a natural centrepiece over a doorway, an overmantel, a headboard or a cabinet pediment. Furniture makers and restorers use motifs like this to crown a panel or bridge a run of moulding, and it stands happily on its own as carved wall art above a fireplace. The deep undercuts throw dramatic shadow once oiled or gilded. CNC notes • A roughing pass followed by a ball-nose finishing toolpath handles the flutes and leaf lobes; a fine tapered or V-bit digs into the shell grooves and scroll eyes. • Reach for a carve-friendly hardwood — lime, basswood or cherry — or paint-grade poplar, and back the slender leaf tips with stock until the last cut. • Prefer a printer? Rest it on its flat back, carved side skyward, at 0.1 mm, then bond the reverse to your panel. • Centre it on the workpiece, then stain, paint or gild to suit.
