Description

A long ribbon of carved acanthus that turns a plain rail into a proper centrepiece. This is a wide, low horizontal ornament built for symmetry. From a raised central medallion — a domed button ringed with petal-like flutes — two mirrored arms of foliage sweep outward, each one a run of tight C-scrolls and curling acanthus tips that thin to feathered flourishes at the far ends. The relief is shallow and flowing rather than deep and blocky, so light rakes across it and the scrolls read cleanly even from across a room. It suits a header above a door or archway, a frieze along the top of a cabinet or wardrobe, the crown of a mirror or headboard, or an overmantel above a fireplace. Think of it as an appliqué you carve once and glue on, instantly aging a flat piece of joinery. Print / cut notes • Single-sided relief — machine it flat on the bed, decorated face up, no need to carve the back. • A tapered ball-nose for the roughing pass and a fine 1–2mm ball-nose for the finishing pass keeps the scroll cores crisp. • Run a hardwood with tight grain (beech, maple, tulipwood) so the fine leaf tips don't chip; orient the length along the grain. • Add a small skim allowance so you can hand-sand the raised button and scroll ridges before gilding, waxing or painting. Scale the length to your rail and it stays proportional — the motif repeats naturally if you need a longer run.
