Running Acanthus Scroll Border Moulding

Baroque leafwork that runs and never quite repeats the same way twice. Forget the 'geometric tray' label — this file is a length of ornamental acanthus scroll moulding, a flowing ribbon of carved foliage that curls into tight spirals, throws off feathered leaf tips and blooms into a small central palmette before rolling onward. It's the classic cabinet-maker's flourish, the sort of running frieze you'd find edging a picture frame, a fireplace surround or the apron of a period sideboard. Because the motif is drawn to tile end-to-end, you can carve a single segment or chain several together for a continuous border of any length. Cut notes • Ideal as a CNC relief in hardwood — oak, walnut, cherry, or a tight-grained beech for the finest tips. • Rough out with a large ballnose, then finish the undercuts and leaf veins with a 1–2 mm tapered ball bit. • Watch the deep pockets between scrolls; a v-carve pass cleans the sharp valleys a ballnose can't reach. • Sand lightly, then a dark wax or gilt cream rubbed into the recesses throws the relief into high contrast. Equally at home routed into timber or printed as appliqué trim and glued to a plain surface, it lends an instant sense of hand-carved heritage to furniture, mirrors and mantels.
