Twin Dragon Cartouche Onlay

Two serpentine dragons face off across a central medallion in this symmetrical relief onlay — a proper heraldic centrepiece for furniture and joinery. At the heart sits an oval boss ringed by a twisted rope moulding, capped above by a small acanthus palmette crest. From either side, a pair of mirror-image dragons rear inward, their scaled bodies flowing outward into long scrolling foliate tails that taper to graceful points at the ends of the strip. The carving is a shallow-to-medium relief, sculpted to sit proud of a flat backing so it can be glued straight onto a panel. It is made for cabinet doors, headboards, a fireplace overmantel, mirror or clock crests, or the frieze above a doorway — anywhere a plain surface wants a touch of old-world grandeur. Cutting notes • Carve in a tight-grained hardwood (oak, maple, tulipwood) so the fine tails and rope twist hold their edge • Rough with a larger end mill, then finish the scrollwork and scales with a tapered ball-nose for smooth flowing detail • Runs as a glue-on appliqué; leave a flat base and clamp evenly while the adhesive cures • Also casts cleanly in resin or plaster from a printed master if you need a batch of matching onlays
