Description

Twin scrolls of acanthus, mirrored around a single bloom. This is an openwork ornamental onlay built on perfect left-right symmetry: two vine-like scrolls sweep up and outward, their tips curling back into furled leaf-buds, while smaller leaves branch off along the way. Down the centre sits the anchor, a four-petalled flower-cross flanked by little tulip motifs and a strand of graduated beads, with a pair of loose berries floating above. Made to dress furniture and joinery, it suits a cabinet frieze, a door or drawer front, a mirror surround, or the crest rail of a headboard, anywhere a plain flat surface wants a flourish of carved detail. CNC notes: • Shallow-to-medium relief overall; a fine tapered V-bit cuts the leaf veins and scroll cores, with a small ball-nose for the rounded flower. • Mill it flat on the sheet; the thin scroll arms are the fragile part, so use holding tabs until the final pass. • Tight-grained hardwood such as cherry, maple or walnut holds the delicate tips; MDF is fine if it is destined for paint. • Glue-mount it as an applied onlay, or pocket a shallow recess so it sits flush into the surrounding surface.
