Description

A long, low horizontal frieze in the restrained neoclassical taste of a Georgian drawing room. Across the face of the strip runs a slender laurel-leaf garland, looped into two gentle swags that dip toward the middle and rise again at the ends. At the centre those swags gather into a small circular wreath, and each end terminates in a neat husk-drop pendant that hangs like a little bellflower tassel. The relief is shallow and refined rather than showy, so it reads as elegant trim rather than a statement carving. This is a classic length of ornamental banding, ideal for anyone restoring or dressing up joinery. It suits the frieze rail of a fireplace surround, the top rail of a door casing, a drawer front, or a run beneath a mantel shelf. The symmetrical, repeating logic means you can butt copies end to end to carry the garland along a longer span. Cutting notes • Single-sided relief: rough out with a larger end mill, then finish with a tapered ball-nose bit to keep the leaf veins crisp • A tight-grained hardwood such as maple, cherry or tulipwood holds the fine laurel detail best • Keep the panel proud of its background so the swag catches a shadow line • Scale to your run first, then check the tassel drops still clear the board edges; it also casts cleanly in resin or plaster if you want multiples
