Acanthus-Framed Oval Monogram Onlay

A slim vertical oval framed in curling acanthus leaves. The centre is a smooth, gently domed oval, deliberately left blank so it doubles as a ready surface for a monogram, a date or a hand-engraved motif. Around it, stylised acanthus foliage grips the sides in mirrored pairs, and a pair of scrolling leaf tips furl outward at the foot to anchor the whole applique. This is the kind of onlay that lifts a plain surface instantly. Fix it to a cabinet door, a wardrobe panel, the crest of a mirror or the headboard of a bed; its tall proportion also suits a newel-cap face or the stile of a period door. Cut notes • Deep-relief carving: rough out with an end mill, then finish the leaf undercuts and the domed centre with a tapered ball-nose bit. • Treat the smooth oval as your reference plane — a fine finishing pass here shows every tool mark, so take light stepovers. • Cuts cleanly in MDF, tulipwood or resin board for painting; choose a tight-grained hardwood if you plan to leave it bare. • The flat back glues straight to any surface, so there is no fitting to fuss over.
