Description

A cascade of open flowers spilling around a right-angle turn. This decorative corner onlay follows an L-shaped path: full, five-petalled blossoms cluster densest at the corner elbow and thin out into flowing acanthus leaves that trail down both the horizontal and vertical arms. The flowers have plump raised centres and softly cupped petals, while the leaves curl and split with deep undercut veining, giving the whole piece a lively, hand-carved swirl. Appliqués like this are made to dress the corners of things: cabinet doors, mirror and picture frames, headboards, a hutch, a fireplace surround or a jewellery box lid. Print or carve one for each corner (mirror the file for the opposing sides) to frame a panel with matching florals, or use a single one as an accent above a doorway. Print / carve notes • This is a deep, layered relief, so leave a roughing pass with a 6mm end mill then finish with a 2mm tapered ball-nose to reach between the petals and leaf curls. • The undercut flower centres and leaf tips benefit from a slower finishing feed to avoid fuzz on the raised edges. • Close-grained hardwoods such as beech, cherry or lime hold the fine petal detail best; sand lightly and it takes stain or gilding beautifully. • Machine face-up flat, then part off and glue onto your project; mirror horizontally for a matched pair of corners.
