Rolled-Rim Shallow Tray Blank

A low, softly-rimmed tray blank where the profile does all the work. Caught almost edge-on under warm light, this piece resolves into a shallow rectangular tray: a broad flat field bordered by a gently swelling rim that rolls over and steps down into a smooth ogee underside. There is no fussy surface pattern here — the whole character sits in that rounded lip and the way the light gathers and slides along it. It's the kind of understated base that becomes a serving or catch-all tray, a candle plinth, or a platform to show off a carved centrepiece. Because the geometry is continuous and unbroken, it machines kindly. A large-diameter cutter can hog the recessed field quickly, and the rounded rim finishes beautifully with a ball-nose pass following the perimeter. Print / cut notes • Best cut from a stable hardwood — walnut, oak or maple — so the rolled edge stays crisp. • Rough the flat field first, then run a fine ball-nose finishing pass over the rim to erase step lines. • Break and hand-sand the lip through the grits; the edge is the piece, so give it time. • Finish with a food-safe oil or hardwax if you intend to use it around the kitchen. Equally at home as a 3D print, where a wide flat orientation and a smooth top layer keep the rim looking moulded rather than layered.
