Acanthus Leaf Crest Onlay

A single acanthus leaf, opened out like a fan of flame. Layered leaflets curl away from a strong central spine, each lobe tipped and channelled so the light catches every ridge, and the whole spray narrows to a pointed crest at the top while splaying wide at the base. It is the classic carver's motif, sculpted with deep, confident scoops. Use it as an onlay or appliqué wherever a plain surface needs a crown: the centre of a cabinet pediment, the top of a mirror frame, a bed headboard, a corbel face, or a repeating capital detail. Its symmetry means it sits happily dead-centre on almost anything. Carving / printing • On a CNC this is a rewarding deep-relief job — rough with an end mill, then reach into the leaf channels with a small tapered ball nose; lime, cherry and walnut all carve cleanly. • 3D print it flat-backed on the plate: no supports, and resin holds the crisp leaf tips better than FDM. • Check your Z depth so the tallest curling lobes don't get clipped in a relief carve. • Mount with the spine vertical and finish with a raking-light-friendly stain or gilt cream to show off the layering.
