Description

A wild-bearded mask crowned with scrolls and swept-back wings. This ornamental carving is a grotesque face: a broad-nosed, heavy-browed man with a thick moustache flowing into a deep forked beard, his hair curling up into a shell-like plume and twin volute scrolls above the forehead. On either side the design sweeps out into long, wing-like acanthus scrolls, giving it a mask-and-cartouche silhouette. It carries the theatrical feel of a Baroque keystone or fountain mascaron — part green man, part river-god. It is made to mount as a centrepiece: a cabinet or fireplace overmantel, a door crown, a headboard medallion or a standalone wall plaque. Cut notes • This is a deep, high-relief model — allow plenty of Z depth and rough with a stout end mill before switching to a fine ball-nose for the beard strands and eye sockets • The undercuts around the moustache and scrolls carve best in a close-grained hardwood such as lime, cherry or walnut • On a 3-axis machine, add a finishing pass along both X and Y to clean the steep cheek and scroll faces • Seal and wax for a warm satin sheen, or lightly lime-wash the recesses to lift the beard detail Symmetrical left to right, so it hangs true as a single central ornament above a panel or arch.
