Winged Acanthus Crest Onlay

Two great acanthus wings sweep up and out from a central spine, giving this crest the look of something about to take flight. The design is built for the top of a piece: from a compact palmette core, long feathered leaves arc away to either side and finish in loose open curls, while below the centre a smaller anthemion fans downward and trails off into a hanging string of graduated beads, like a drop of water frozen mid-fall. It is a proper pediment ornament, meant to crown a mirror frame, a tall cabinet, an overmantel or a bed. The wide wingspan lets it bridge a broad top rail, and because the whole thing is symmetrical it centres itself by eye. Carved in medium relief, the leaves overlap and roll so shadows shift across the surface as the light moves. Print / cut notes • Best in a stable hardwood (walnut, cherry, lime) where the thin leaf tips and bead drop won't snap; leave the workpiece oversized and trim after carving. • Two-tool path recommended: a 4mm ball-nose for the leaf bodies, then a 1.5mm tapered bit to sharpen the curl centres and the beaded pendant. • Orient the grain horizontally through the wingspan so the outstretched tips have long-grain support. • The lower bead drop is the fragile point, machine it last and clear chips gently to avoid catching it.
