Baroque Acanthus Cornice Crest

A sweeping baroque crest that turns a plain cabinet into a centrepiece. This is a long, horizontal carved onlay built to span the top of a wardrobe, a headboard or an overmantel mirror. The composition reads symmetrically: bold C-scroll volutes curl inward at each end, a continuous band of acanthus foliage and shell-like flourishes rolls across the middle, and two carved corbel drops descend below the lower edge like small pendant brackets. A fine beaded rope moulding runs along the crest, tightening the silhouette and catching light along its whole length. It suits period joinery and reproduction furniture, but it will also lift a flat modern panel when you want a hint of old-world grandeur. Fix it as a single appliqué or mirror it end to end for a wider run. Print notes • Cut in a close-grained hardwood such as maple, tulipwood or lime so the beading and leaf tips hold a crisp edge. • Rough the form with a large ballnose, then chase the veining and undercuts with a 15-30 degree tapered V-bit. • The piece is shallow front to back, so it lays flat on the bed with no supports and glues straight onto a substrate. • Sand lightly, then wax or gild; a dark glaze wiped into the recesses makes the scrollwork stand out.
