Baroque Scroll Center Onlay

Twin scrolls unfurling from a little carved shell — quiet baroque drama in a long, low sweep. This horizontal onlay is symmetrical about its middle, where a fluted fan-shell drops below the line and a single bead sits just above it. From that anchor, two pairs of acanthus scrolls roll outward and curl over on themselves, thinning to feathered tips at the far ends. The result is a gently arched garland — much wider than it is tall — built to run along the top rail of something. Restorers and cabinetmakers use appliqués like this to crown a mirror, dress the apron of a console table, or centre the top rail of a headboard or cabinet door. Its low, spreading shape also suits an over-door pediment where you want ornament without height. Print notes • This is a shallow, flowing relief; a 2mm-or-finer ball-nose finishing pass will render the rolled scroll edges smoothly. • Softwood carves fast for a painted finish, while hardwood holds the crisp scroll tips better under stain. • Because the ends taper thin, cut it as a glue-on onlay rather than pocketing it in — far easier to clamp and less likely to chip. • Wipe a dark wax into the recesses afterward to throw the scrollwork forward off the background.
