Description

A Norse sea-dragon coiled into a living rune. This deep-relief panel carves a Viking dragon into a sinuous S, its crested head thrown back with jaws parted over a barbed, forked tongue. Braided knotwork fills the neck and belly, weaving through the beast like rope pulled tight, while a row of Nordic runes runs along the lower curl as if branding the creature with its own name. Fins, spurs and curling tendrils spin off the tail to fill the negative space, giving the whole piece the balanced, all-over rhythm of authentic Norse animal ornament. It reads as a statement wall piece for anyone drawn to Viking, Norse-pagan or old-world history aesthetics — mount it above a mantel, on a workshop feature wall, or frame it as a plaque. The layered depth catches raking light beautifully and holds a stain or gilt wash in its recesses. Print notes: • Carve in hardwood (oak, walnut, ash) for crisp knot edges; a 1/8" or 1/16" ball-nose finishing pass keeps the interlacing clean. • Machine as a relief on a flat blank — there are no undercuts, so a 3-axis router handles it fully. • If 3D printing instead, lay it flat and print face-up with light supports only under the raised mane tips. • Finish with a dark glaze wiped back to pop the runes and knot channels, then wax or oil.
