Winged Acanthus Foliate Onlay

Two mirrored sprays of acanthus leaf sweep outward from a central pendant, spreading like a pair of feathered wings. The carving is all movement — deeply undercut leaf tips curl and split, tight C-scrolls roll under at each wing tip, and a smooth teardrop drop hangs at the centre to pin the symmetry in place. Light rakes across the lobes and hollows and gives the whole thing a lively, hand-chiselled character. It's a classic cresting or apron ornament, the foliate cartouche you fix above a doorway, at the top rail of a mirror or headboard, on a clock hood, or centred along a wide cabinet frieze. That broad, low silhouette is perfect for capping a horizontal span while pulling the eye firmly to the middle. Print notes: • The undercut leaf edges are the star; on a router use a tapered ball-nose for the 3D pass, then a small finishing pass to sharpen the tips. • If 3D printing, orient it flat with the decorated side up. A few light supports under the most deeply lifted leaves help — keep them sparse to protect the detail. • Perfectly symmetrical, so you can mirror two back-to-back to build a longer swag. • Close-grained stock or a smooth resin holds the pointed leaf tips best; prime and gild for a genuinely dramatic finish.
