Rose Basket Furniture Crest Onlay

Three full-blown roses spilling from a scrolled basket, with leafy vines sweeping out to either side. This is a horizontal decorative onlay built for symmetry: a small fluted scroll-basket sits dead centre, a trio of open roses clusters above it framed by broad serrated leaves, and from the base two long tendril arms curl outward in mirror image, each ending in a tucked leaf and a tight spiral. The relief is rounded and naturalistic, with the rose petals layered in soft, deep curls that read as genuinely three-dimensional rather than stamped. The wide, low profile makes it a natural crest piece — a header for a cabinet door, mirror frame, headboard, mantel or the apron of a dresser, anywhere a horizontal span wants a floral centrepoint. It is a staple of the ornate, traditional furniture-decor vocabulary. Cut notes • Best on a 3-axis router: rough with a 1/4-inch end-mill, then finish the petals and leaf veins with a 1/8-inch tapered ball-nose for tight roll-over detail. • The thin outer tendrils are delicate — cut them from a tight-grained hardwood (maple, cherry, beech) or a dense resin blank so they do not snap on release. • Keep the flat back as-is for gluing directly onto the workpiece. • Sand the spiral tips by hand and ease any tool-mark ridges with a fine detail brush before finishing. • Gilt cream or a warm wax over paint gives it a period, gilded look.
