Acanthus Cartouche Furniture Onlay

An acanthus flourish frozen mid-unfurl. This decorative onlay is a symmetrical foliate cartouche: a slim central palmette spikes upward, flanked by pairs of leaves that sweep outward and roll over into four tightly curled volutes along the top edge. Below, the acanthus fronds dip and scroll into a pair of small answering curls at the base, giving the piece a graceful, mirror-image balance across its horizontal spread. It is a furniture and joinery ornament — glue it to a cabinet crest, a door header, the top of a mirror or headboard, an overmantel, or a plaque to add a hit of baroque flourish. The low, flowing relief catches raking light beautifully. CNC / print notes: • Machine as a 2.5D relief; a ball-nose finishing pass is essential to round the rolled volutes and leaf channels smoothly. • Hardwood carves with the crispest highlights, though primed MDF or hardwood-topped stock takes gilding and paint well. • The design is left-right symmetric, so it scales cleanly to your rail width without distorting the centre. • Sand into the deep undercuts behind the scrolls before finishing; a dark wax in the recesses makes the raised leaves pop. Just as effective 3D-printed as raised wall art or a repeated moulding accent if you are not routing.
