Symmetrical Acanthus Scroll Onlay

A wingspan of acanthus leaves flaring up and out from a gathered centre knot. This is a wide horizontal onlay built on perfect mirror symmetry. From a ribbed central band the foliage lifts in two directions at once: tall feathered acanthus fronds rising through the middle, softer leaf tips curling over the shoulders, and a pair of long C-scrolls rolling inward at each far end to close the composition. The carving is a raised applique meant to sit proud of a flat surface, its edges undercut so the leaves seem to peel away from the backing. It is the classic decorative crown: fit it above a door or archway, across the top rail of a cabinet or wardrobe, along a mantel, over a mirror, or centred on a headboard. Because the design is symmetrical it also cuts cleanly as a matched pair if you mirror it. Print / cut notes • Ideal in maple, cherry or beech; the fine leaf tips need a wood that holds a crisp arris. • A 1–2mm tapered ball-nose handles the flowing veins and the rolled scroll eyes best. • Glue-up as an onlay onto a finished panel rather than pocketing it in — the relief is designed to stand proud. • Ease and lightly sand the frond tips by hand before finishing; they are the first thing a viewer touches. Gilded, limed or simply oiled, it lends an instant period, Louis-style flourish to plain furniture.
