Description

A flourish of leaves parting around a single bloom. This is a wide, symmetrical carved centrepiece: a stylised tulip stands upright at the middle above a small palmette, and from either side a pair of acanthus leaves sweeps outward and dips, their tips furling into leafy hooks. A run of raised beading follows each scroll like a string of pearls, and the whole ornament spans far wider than it is tall — made to crown a horizontal span. Furniture restorers and cabinetmakers use pieces like this above a door frame, along a headboard rail, across a cabinet cornice or centred on a fireplace overmantel. It pairs naturally with matching corner pieces for a complete frame. Machining notes: • Carve it as a wide, low-to-medium relief onlay; the leaf undercuts are gentle enough for a 3-axis machine with a tapered ball-nose finisher. • Orient the blank horizontally and mind grain direction so the long leaf tips don't run out to short grain and chip. • Beech, oak or a tight mahogany all suit the flowing foliage and take gilding or dark wax well. • Leave a thin flat margin around the design to clamp and register, then part it free and hand-sand the bead rows.
