Palmette And Acanthus Pediment Onlay

A little coronet of carved foliage, built to crown a cabinet. At the heart sits a ribbed palmette, a stiff, upright shell-fan, from which two acanthus scrolls peel away and roll into tight volutes on either side. Beneath the centre hangs a drooping husk of layered leaves, like a stylised tassel. The whole ornament is low and wide, perfectly mirrored left to right, so it settles naturally over a doorway, a mirror, a mantel clock or the apex of a headboard. Everything about it speaks classical cabinetmaking: the fan, the C-scrolls and the pendant drop are the vocabulary of Georgian and Victorian joinery, ready to give flat-pack furniture an antique voice. Print notes: • Orient it flat and carve as a shallow relief; the deepest cuts fall at the volute eyes and the base of the fan. • A V-bit clears the tight spirals, then switch to a ball-nose to round over the fan ribs and leaf backs. • Prime and paint or water-gild; the broad smooth surfaces take a metallic finish beautifully. • Glue and pin it to the workpiece, as the flat back sits flush against any panel.
