Palmette And Scroll Furniture Onlay

A crowned palmette anchors a pair of unfurling C-scrolls. This is a slim horizontal onlay in the classic Neoclassical manner. At its centre a fan-shaped palmette rises above a round boss, and from it two symmetrical C-scrolls sweep outward, each punctuated by a small beaded ball and finishing in a little trefoil leaf. The relief is shallow and softly rounded, meant to sit proud of a flat surface and cast a gentle shadow line rather than dominate it. Onlays like this are the finishing touch on cabinet doors, drawer rails, mirror frames, headboards, mantels and clock cases — glued on to break up a plain panel or centre a door top. Because it is mirror-symmetrical it reads equally well as a single centred motif or repeated in a run along a rail. Cut notes • This is a raised relief carve, not a through-cut: rough with a flat end mill, then finish with a tapered ball-nose for the rounded scrolls and beadwork. • A tight step-over on the finishing pass keeps the flowing surfaces smooth and cuts down on sanding. • Machine it in a close-grained hardwood — maple, cherry, beech or tulipwood — for clean edges, or MDF if you plan to paint. • Leave a flat glue face on the back and trim to length; PVA and a couple of pins hold it while it sets.
