Scrolled Centre Frieze Onlay

A slender bar of moulding that flows out to reeded ends, gathered at its heart by a knot of scrolls. The central motif is deliberately delicate: a small open oval framed by paired C-scrolls that curl back on themselves, almost like a stylised ribbon or a pair of cresting waves meeting in the middle. From there the profile stretches away in a long, tapering reeded run to each squared terminal, keeping the whole piece low, wide and quietly refined. This is a horizontal accent — a centre rail for a cabinet door, the crown band of a drawer front, an overmantel stripe, or a divider between panels of wainscot. Because the relief stays shallow and the line runs horizontal, it suits long, narrow spaces where a tall carving would sit heavy. Print notes: • Lay it flat and carve in low relief; the scroll voids are the only spot that really wants a fine tapered bit — a 2 mm ball-nose or smaller clears them cleanly. • On a CNC, take a shallow depth of cut across the reeded ends to avoid tear-out along the grain. • FDM or resin prints best flat on the plate, decorated face up; no supports, and a fine layer height keeps the scroll tips sharp. • Scale the length to your workpiece — the reeded run tiles happily end to end if you need to cover a longer span.
