Scrolled Acanthus Apron Onlay

A graceful sweep for the underside of things. This is a long, low horizontal ornament, a shaped apron or valance piece built around a symmetrical burst of curling acanthus leaves at its centre. Two furled scrolls meet in the middle, each anchored by a small carved bead, and the fronds fan outward before the profile tapers to slim, gently arched tails at either end. The lower edge dips in a soft double curve, the classic line of a cabinet skirt or table apron. It is made to run beneath things: the front rail of a table or console, the base of a cabinet, the bottom of a mirror or headboard, or as a centred crest along a pelmet. CNC notes: • Largely a 2.5D relief, so rough with a flat end mill, then finish the leaf curls and beads with a ball-nose bit for rounded, flowing highs and lows. • The tapered ends are delicate; leave onion-skin tabs and part them by hand to avoid tear-out. • Oak, ash, walnut or a paint-grade hardwood all suit it; the raised centre takes a dark wax beautifully. • Mirror or repeat the profile if your piece is wider than the blank, matching the scroll at the centre line.
