Scrolled Lotus Acanthus Onlay

A symmetrical burst of carved foliage, half lotus and half acanthus, scattered with rows of beads. The onlay builds from a broad lotus-style fan at the base, its long pointed petals opening left and right, up through a central feathered plume and outward into tight rolled volutes at the shoulders. Between the leaves float graduated strings of round beads, giving the flat relief a sense of sparkle and depth. The whole motif is mirror-perfect down the middle and reads as a single ornamental crest. This is a classic furniture and interior appliqué: glue it to a cabinet door, the apron of a console, a headboard crown, a mirror frame, or a fireplace surround to add instant period richness. Sign makers and picture framers use pieces like this as corner or centre ornaments. The relief is shallow and continuous, which makes it forgiving to machine and easy to mount flush against a flat surface. Print notes: • Rough with a 6mm ball-nose, then finish with a 1–2mm tapered ball to sharpen the bead separations and petal tips. • Carve in lime, tulipwood or a stable MDF blank if it will be painted or gilded. • Leave a thin flat margin around the outline so it seats cleanly when glued. • Printing instead? Lay it flat on the bed, relief upward, for a support-free run and a clean back for adhesive.
