Beaded Palmette Shell Onlay

A carved fan of foliage crowned with beaded pods. This decorative onlay opens into a symmetrical palmette — a spray of deeply ribbed leaves fanning upward, each stalk tipped with a small rounded bead. The spray gathers at a tidy rosette knot in the middle, then drops into a lower scallop-shell fan with its own ribbed flutes. It's a classic Baroque/Rococo furniture ornament, the kind used to dress cabinet doors, headboards, mirror crowns, mantels and pilaster tops. The relief is generous and rounded, so it looks equally good carved in timber or printed and gilded. Cut & print notes • Ideal as a 2.5D CNC relief: rough with an end mill, then a ball-nose finishing pass to round the leaf ribs and beads. • Hardwoods (oak, walnut, cherry) take the flutes crisply; MDF works if you're painting or gilding. • 3D printing works too — resin for the sharp bead detail, then prime and gild or antique-wash the recesses. • Mirror the model to make a matching left/right pair for symmetrical placements around a centre. • Sand along the grain and ease the leaf tips so they don't chip. Size it to your panel and glue or pin it proud of the surface for a rich, hand-carved look without the hand-carving.
