Shell and Scroll Horizontal Onlay

Old-world cabinetmaker's flourish, ready for your router. D 392 is a horizontal decorative onlay — a long, symmetrical spray of carving that runs left to right. At its heart sits a fluted shell or palmette, framed by tight paired volutes, and from there two acanthus C-scrolls uncurl outward and taper into elegant whip-tails at each end. The relief is shallow and flowing, all soft rounded ridges catching the light, the kind of applique you'd find crowning a drawer front or centred beneath a mantel shelf. It suits furniture restorers, cabinet builders and sign makers who want a period-correct accent to dress a plain panel, headboard, door or mirror frame. Carved in oak, walnut or a tight-grained hardwood it passes for hand-work; cut in MDF it primes and paints beautifully for a gilded or painted finish. Cut notes: • This is a one-sided relief — machine it as a raised carving on a flat blank, no roughing from the back needed. • Rough with a 6mm ballnose, then finish with a 2mm tapered ball for the crisp scroll cores and the shell flutes. • Grain runs along the long axis; orient your stock that way to keep the thin tail-ends from chipping. • Sand lightly, seal, and glue-and-clamp onto the workpiece; the flat underside sits flush with no gaps.
