Description

A cascading fleur-de-lis crest that fans out like a fountain frozen in carved wood. This is a decorative onlay, not a mandala tray. At the top sits a crisp fleur-de-lis finial — a central spear flanked by two tight inward scrolls, capped over a round bead. From that bead, ribbon-like acanthus leaves spill downward and sweep outward in mirrored pairs, curling up at their tips before the whole arrangement narrows to a pointed, leafy drop at the base. The composition is perfectly bilateral, elegant and vertical, with deep channels between each frond that throw crisp shadows. Ornaments like this are made to dress the top rail of a cabinet, the centre of a door panel, a mirror crown, a clock case or a headboard — anywhere a piece of furniture needs a flourish. It also stands on its own as a small carved wall accent. Cut notes • Machine it in medium relief; a fine tapered ball-nose (1.5mm–3mm) reaches into the narrow scroll gaps that a larger bit would blur. • Orient the long axis along the grain so the delicate leaf tips don't break out during the finishing pass. • Beech, cherry or a stable modelling board carve cleanest for this level of scrollwork. • Deburr the fronds by hand, keep the recesses sharp, then seal and wax — the drama here is all in the light catching those curled leaf edges.
