Twin Acanthus Palmette Cove Cornice

A classical cornice length where two acanthus fans bloom either side of a slender hanging finial. This is a horizontal cove moulding carved in the neoclassical manner. The face sweeps inward in a gentle concave scotia, and within it sit two mirrored acanthus palmettes, each cradled inside a recessed oval cartouche so the leafwork reads as raised medallions. Between them a delicate drop ornament hangs from a small ball boss, tapering into a budding leaf and a pendant teardrop — the kind of centre accent you find on Georgian and Empire-style joinery. Crisp fillet edges run top and bottom, giving the run a clean lip that mitres neatly at corners. It is built to be a repeating element: mantel crowns, cabinet and wardrobe friezes, door overmantels, mirror surrounds and picture-frame runs. Because the motif is symmetrical it tiles convincingly along a longer wall or shelf edge. Cut notes • Best routed in a tight-grained hardwood — beech, cherry, tulipwood or oak — so the leaf tips hold. • Rough with a large ball-nose, then finish the acanthus veining and the pendant undercuts with a 2–3mm tapered ball bit. • Keep the length running with the grain and leave a little stock at each end for clean mitre trimming. • Sand the cove with a foam block to preserve the flow before staining or gilding. Equally printable in resin or PLA when you need a lightweight applique to paint and glue onto furniture.
