Fanned Acanthus Palmette Onlay

A crisp fan of acanthus leaves caught mid-unfurl. This relief carving opens like a spray of foliage: a tall central spade-shaped leaf rises from a slender stem, its surface cut into deep parallel channels that fan outward toward a scalloped crown. Two side fronds sweep away from the spine and curl back on themselves into tight, ball-tipped volutes, while a small pair of downturned leaves forms a calyx at the base. The whole piece is symmetrical, flowing and shallow-backed, the kind of ornamental motif you find on antique cabinet doors and mirror crowns. It is made to be applied, not stood alone. Cabinet makers and restorers use pieces like this as an onlay or appliqué to dress the centre of a drawer front, the top rail of a headboard, a mantel frieze or a plain door panel, instantly lifting flat joinery into something ornate. Print / cut notes • The model has a flat back, so lay it face-up on the bed or spoilboard for a clean rear that glues down flush. • CNC in a tight-grained hardwood (oak, maple, walnut) with a fine ball-nose bit for the fluted channels; a 3D-print in resin captures the crisp veining best. • Almost no supports are needed thanks to the flat reverse; only the undercut scroll tips may want a touch. • Sand the raised leaf surfaces, then stain, paint or gild to suit the host furniture.
