Description
A single acanthus flame, frozen mid-unfurl. This onlay is a classic carved leaf appliqué — a tall central frond splitting into pointed lobes that arch outward, then gathering at the foot into two tight scrolled volutes that curl back on themselves like breaking waves. Every lobe is deeply channelled, so raking light throws long shadows down the piece and gives it real depth despite a shallow overall relief. It is the sort of ornament that dresses the crown of a mirror, the apron of a cabinet, a headboard, a fire surround or a newel post — glue-on decoration that makes flat joinery look commissioned rather than assembled. Making notes • Best cut as a two-tool relief: a ballnose for the flowing leaf hollows, then a small tapered ballnose to sharpen the scroll eyes and lobe tips. • Basswood, lime or tupelo carve cleanly and take paint or gilding; oak reads well left bare with an oiled finish. • The design has a flat back, so it mounts straight onto a panel with wood glue and a couple of pins. • Mirror the file to make a left/right pair for symmetrical placements.
