Description

The same graceful scrollwork, this time set into a running length of moulding. Here a carved centrepiece — a domed oval flanked by furling acanthus leaves, C-scrolls and a little cluster of beads beneath — sits at the middle of a flat horizontal rail with softly rounded top and bottom edges. Unlike a free-floating onlay, the plain banded strip carries on to either side of the ornament, so it reads as a finished piece of decorative trim rather than a separate applique. That makes it ideal wherever you need length: a drawer or door rail, a frieze beneath a cabinet cornice, a fireplace mantel band, a bed or mirror frame member, or a decorative header run across a piece of casework. Cut notes: • Carve the whole rail in one pass so the central relief and the flanking bands sit on the same surface plane. • The blank ends are plain by design — extend or tile the flat sections to reach the exact run length your project needs. • Rough with an end mill, then detail the leaves and beading with a fine ball-nose; the flat bands can be surfaced separately for a clean finish. • Pick a hardwood that matches your carcass timber, and break the sharp arris along the rail edges so it seats flush against adjoining trim.
