Scrollwork Crest Cabinet Onlay

A little crown of scrollwork that turns a plain edge into something worth looking at. This is a symmetrical decorative onlay built around a single upright leaf finial at its peak. From that centre point two mirrored C-scrolls curl inward like a pair of ram's horns, cradling a smooth round boss that sits proud in the middle. Below, the design sweeps outward into two long tapering tendrils that finish in tight snail-shell curls, giving the whole piece the crested, arching profile of a Victorian pediment. The relief is rounded and softly modelled rather than sharp, so light rolls across it beautifully once it's finished. It reads as a crown or crest, which is exactly where it belongs: capping a cabinet door, sitting above a mirror or headboard, dressing the top rail of a clock case, or centring a drawer front. Furniture restorers and hobby woodworkers use appliqués like this to lift flat-pack pieces into something with character. Print / CNC notes • Cut face-up in MDF, poplar or a close-grained hardwood; a 90-degree V-bit for the tight scroll valleys, a small ball-nose for the rounded crowns. • Keep it shallow — this is an applied onlay, not a deep pocket carve; 6–10mm stock is plenty. • On an FDM printer, lay it flat on its back face so the decorated side needs no supports, then sand and prime for paint or gilding. • Glue directly onto the host surface; the flat reverse mounts cleanly with wood glue or grab adhesive.
