Wind-Combed Wave Border Molding

A ribbon of wind-combed waves, ready to run the length of a mantel or door frame. This CNC relief is a decorative border molding: a long rectangular strip filled edge to edge with slender vertical strands that curl into a synchronised S-wave, so the whole surface reads like tall grass leaning in a breeze — or a length of loosely woven basketry caught mid-twist. Plain raised rails cap the top and bottom, framing the busy centre band and giving you a clean line to butt against neighbouring trim. It's built to be milled as continuous frieze or cornice work — over a fireplace, along a cabinet cornice, as a headboard rail or a repeating panel border. Because the motif tiles left to right, you can cut it at almost any length and the waves keep marching without an awkward seam. Print notes • Best carved in a close-grained hardwood (maple, beech, tulipwood) or dense MDF for crisp ridge edges; open-grain softwoods blur the fine grooves. • A tapered ball-nose bit (3–6 mm) gives the rounded valley between strands; follow with a fine finishing pass to smooth the flanks. • Keep working depth around 12–18 mm so the raised border rails stay proud of the wave field. • Sand along the wave rather than across, then oil or wax; a dark glaze wiped into the grooves makes the ripple pop.
