Description

A long, gently rippling crest rail with a posy blooming at its heart. The piece is a slim horizontal moulding whose top edge waves in a shallow serpentine curve, dipping to a scalloped low point in the middle. Right at that centre sits a small carved cluster: two open blossoms flanked by round berries and a pair of slender side leaves, the only ornament on an otherwise smooth, elegant length. The restraint is the point, the eye goes straight to the flowers. This is a furniture cresting: the top rail of a bed headboard or footboard, the crown of a wardrobe or cabinet, a valance over a mirror, or a decorative pelmet above a doorway. Its long, thin proportion makes it a finishing trim rather than a focal carving. The body is essentially a smooth profiled bar, so the machining effort concentrates on the central floral node. Print notes: • Cut from a wide, straight board; the shallow waves keep waste low and the back stays flat for mounting. • Use a large ball-nose to sweep the smooth field, then a 1mm tapered ball for the petals, berries and leaf veins. • Lime or poplar carve cleanly and take paint or gilt well if the flowers are to be picked out. • 3D printing? Lay it flat, relief up; the low profile needs no supports and gives a clean gluing face.
