Description

A symmetrical flourish of scrolls cradling a smooth oval boss — a proper cabinet crown. This is a horizontal decorative onlay carved in shallow relief. At its heart sits a raised oval cabochon, plain and polished-looking, framed by a pair of mirrored C-scroll curls that spring away to either side. Beneath the oval, a small fan of beaded drops hangs like a string of pearls, and the scroll tails taper out into long, sweeping wings that run naturally along a rail or drawer front. The whole thing is calm, balanced and classical — Victorian cabinetmaker by way of French provincial. It is designed to be made and then glued on: a centrepiece for a cabinet door, the crest of a mirror frame, the middle of a headboard, or a mantel apron. Cutting notes: • Works beautifully in close-grained hardwood such as beech, cherry or tulipwood, or in MDF for a painted finish. • Rough with a small end mill, then run a ball-nose finishing pass so the rounded scrolls and boss read smoothly. • The piece is wider than it is tall — nest it on a horizontal blank and leave onion-skin tabs to hold it during the final pass. • Sand the raised faces, then stain, paint or gild to match the host furniture. Mirror or repeat it along a longer run and you have a coordinated set for a whole cabinet.
