Waisted Valet Catch-All Tray

A soft-cornered dish with real presence. This CNC file is a shallow rectangular tray carved as a single smooth pocket, a broad concave basin framed by gently pinched, waisted sides that pull inward at the middle of each long edge and flare back out at the corners. There's no surface pattern to distract; the whole appeal is the sweeping curvature and the clean bevelled lip that catches light right around the rim. It reads like a valet tray, soap dish or catch-all, and suits a hardwood blank where the grain can flow across the hollow. Drop it by the front door for keys and coins, on a desk for clips and cufflinks, or in a bathroom for a bar of soap. The simple form makes it a quick, satisfying router project and an easy one to batch for gifts or market stock. Cutting notes • Rough the pocket with a 6mm end mill, then finish the sweep with a ball-nose for a glassy interior. • Leave the outer profile until last and cut it with tabs so the piece stays anchored. • Walnut, oak or maple all suit it; a food-safe oil finish works if you'll rest food or soap in it. • Scale the depth to your stock and keep at least 8mm of wall beneath the pocket floor.
