Description

A stately header carving built around a single blooming rosette. This relief forms the top rail and shoulders of a mantel or door surround: a clean rectangular frame turns down at both sides into slender uprights, and across the top runs a raised frieze split by a bold circular medallion at dead centre. That medallion is a deeply petalled daisy rosette with a domed button eye, and it is flanked left and right by two shallow, gently scooped cartouche panels with rounded returns, giving the whole crown a calm, symmetrical, Georgian feel. It is the sort of piece cabinetmakers and restorers reach for when a plain fireplace, doorway or headboard needs one dignified focal accent without fuss. Machine it in oak or tulipwood as an applied header, or carve it as a full surround top to sit above an opening. Cut notes • Rough the wide background field with a large flat bit, then switch to a fine tapered ball-nose for the rosette petals and the crisp panel returns. • The central medallion carries the deepest relief, so leave it for a dedicated finishing pass to keep the petal edges sharp. • Grain along the horizontal top rail gives the strongest applied piece; a coat of shellac before waxing pops the rosette shadow. • Scales cleanly from a slim door cornice up to a full mantel width.
