Fluted Twin-Plume Header Onlay

A pair of mirrored plumes that sweep outward like folded wings caught mid-furl. This onlay is a low-relief carving of two symmetrical feathered scrolls that meet at the centre and taper to soft curled points at either end. Each frond is scored with deep, parallel flutes — the rope-and-plume detailing you find on classical furniture crests — and the whole motif rides on a thin flat backing rail so it can be glued flush against a surface. It is a horizontal header piece, far wider than it is tall, made to crown something: the top rail of a door or archway, a mirror frame, a headboard, a cabinet cornice or a mantel shelf. Routed into hardwood and finished, it lends ornate, hand-carved character to otherwise plain joinery, and it reads equally well painted, stained or gilded. Print notes: • Machine face-up on flat stock; the piece is essentially a decorative applique with a single glue face on the back. • The deep valleys between the plumes need a fine tapered ball-nose bit for a clean finishing pass — expect fuzz in the flutes on softer woods. • Scale the length to your opening before cutting; the design stretches gracefully without distorting. • Sand the ridges, seal, then stain or lay gold leaf to make the fluting catch the light.
