Fanned Shell And Acanthus Onlay

A carved sunburst shell, fanned wide open and framed by curling acanthus — the kind of flourish that turns a plain cabinet door into a centrepiece. The relief is built around a scallop-shell fan: a spread of scooped, tongue-like petals radiating out from a tightly ribbed collar at the base. Two crisp C-scroll volutes coil directly beneath that collar, and from them a pair of long acanthus leaves sweep outward and down, their tips rolling under into neat curls. A small stylised leaf drop closes the composition at the bottom centre, giving the whole piece a grounded, perfectly symmetrical anchor. It reads as textbook Georgian and Neoclassical cabinetry ornament — equally at home glued to a cupboard door, a bed headboard, a mirror crown, a mantel frieze or a drawer front. Being fully symmetrical left to right, it mirrors cleanly if you want a matched pair either side of a panel. Cut notes • Roughs beautifully in close-grained hardwoods like oak, walnut, cherry or basswood; MDF is fine for a painted or gilded finish. • Hog the waste with a large ball-nose, then chase the tight petal grooves and scroll cores with a 1/8 in or smaller tapered ball-nose for clean shadow lines. • The model suits a raised appliqué around 12–18 mm deep; scale the Z to taste and leave the back flat for gluing. • Blow chips clear of the deep collar ribs before your finishing pass, then lightly hand-sand the petal ridges so light rakes evenly across the fan.
