Scrolled Acanthus Wing Onlay

A compact, wing-like flourish of carved scrollwork, mirrored around its centre. Two tight spiral volutes sit at the heart of this onlay and uncurl outward into a pair of long, tapering acanthus fronds that sweep to either side before finishing in small rolled buds. The relief is soft and rounded rather than sharp — more flowing ribbon than crisp leaf — which gives it a gentle, understated decorative feel. This is the sort of ornament that dresses the centre of a drawer front, a cabinet apron, a door panel or the frieze above a doorway. Scaled up it becomes a headboard accent; shrunk down it turns into a delicate detail on a jewellery box or a clock case. Print notes • The design is low and broad, so it lays flat on the bed and needs no supports. • Carve in a fine hardwood, or smooth MDF for painted work; the rounded surfaces sand beautifully. • A ballnose bit does most of the shaping here — there are few sharp internal corners, so a clean finish comes in one or two passes. • Glue directly onto a flat substrate, fill the seam, then paint or wax to match the host piece.
