Description

A slender scrolled crest to cap a cabinet, mirror or doorway. This is a long, low, strictly symmetrical onlay — restraint rather than flourish. A plain moulded bar runs the full width and tapers to fine pointed wings at each end, its face gently hollowed. All the ornament is concentrated in a compact centre motif: two mirrored acanthus C-scrolls curling toward each other with a couple of small furled leaves tucked between. It is a classical cresting or pediment trim, made to run along the top of a cabinet, a bookcase, a headboard, a clock case, a door header or a mirror surround, where you want a whisper of decoration without weight. The relief is deliberately shallow, which makes it forgiving to machine: a v-bit to cut the outline and a small ball-nose for the finishing pass is plenty. The catch is the geometry — it is long and thin, so plan your hold-downs or tabbing carefully to stop the stock chattering or lifting mid-cut, and take a light final pass. A tight-grain hardwood keeps the pointed tips from splitting, while paint-grade MDF is fine for a painted scheme; either way, orient the grain along the length. Sand the flat back true for a clean glue line against the furniture.
