Description

A ribbon of filigree that looks drawn in a single breath. This onlay is all delicate line-work: a symmetrical spray of thin, flowing C-scrolls that curl outward from a central axis, topped by a pointed flame-leaf finial and echoed by a smaller teardrop bud at the heart of the design. The scrolls taper to fine points and cross over one another like calligraphic strokes, giving a light, airy, almost hand-forged feel rather than a heavy carved block. Designed as a decorative appliqué, it is made to dress the crown of a mirror or headboard, the rail of a cabinet door, a clock case or a furniture pediment - anywhere a slim, elegant flourish lifts a plain surface. CNC and print notes: • On a router this is V-bit and fine tapered ball-nose work: rough lightly, then let a small detail bit chase the thin scroll tips. Keep the relief shallow so the delicate strokes stay strong. • Choose a tight-grained hardwood - maple, pear or cherry - since open-grain timbers tear out on the fine crossing scrolls. • If 3D printing it as an onlay, lay it flat, relief up, at 0.12 mm layers; the fine tips resolve better slow and cool. • The scroll ends are fragile, so glue to the substrate with the whole panel supported, and handle by the thicker central body until it is mounted.
