Description

A carved flourish that turns a plain panel into something with pedigree. This symmetrical onlay is built from flowing acanthus scrollwork: two feathered leaf plumes sweep upward and outward at the crown like unfurled wings, while a pair of tight C-scroll volutes curl inward at the centre to frame a rounded central boss. Directly below that boss hangs a small teardrop pendant, flanked by fluted leaf-blades that fan out and drape toward the lower edge. The whole piece carries a soft, hand-chiselled roundness — proud and full through the middle, feathering down to crisp, shallow tips at every extremity. It is made to be applied rather than to stand alone: glue it to a cabinet door, a headboard rail, a mantel frieze, a mirror crest or the apron of a console table wherever a little Baroque drama is wanted. Shrunk down it makes a neat drawer-front accent; scaled up it becomes an over-door cartouche. Cut notes • Best routed in a tight-grained hardwood (oak, beech, walnut) or a hard modelling board; it also prints cleanly in resin. • The design is deep-relief and bilaterally symmetric — lay the flat back down on the bed or spoilboard and carve the face upward. • Rough it out with a large ball-nose, then chase the scroll undercuts and flutes with a 2–3mm tapered ball for clean valleys. • Knock the sharp leaf tips back slightly, then wax, paint or gild; a dark glaze wiped into the recesses makes the scrolls jump.
