Upright Acanthus Leaf Onlay

A single acanthus leaf, carved upright and proud. Stripped of any surrounding frame, this onlay is pure foliage: one tall central leaf rising to a curled tip, its deep spine channelled straight up the middle and flanked by softly lobed side leaves that fold and split as they climb. The surface is all smooth, sweeping hollows and raised ridges, catching light the way hand-carved woodwork does. Simple and versatile, it suits the top of a cabinet stile, the centre of a drawer front, a stair bracket, or a vertical accent on a fireplace surround. Mirror a pair and you have matching left and right corner details. Cut notes: • Single-sided relief; mill from a close-grained hardwood (cherry, maple, lime) for the cleanest edges, or MDF if you plan to paint it. • A tapered ball-nose finishing pass gives the crisp central vein and lets the soft leaf hollows flow. • Keep the pointed tip supported against the stock face so it doesn't chip on the final pass. • Sand lightly along the grain, then wax, stain or gild; it takes a warm oil finish beautifully.
