Description

Rolling volutes that turn a plain corner into something baroque. This L-shaped ornament is built from a run of scrolls — big spiralling volutes at the top and along the base, smaller curls tucked between them, each one rolling into a rounded snail's-eye centre. The scrolls overlap and flow in a single continuous line from the tall upright element down and around the corner, with a small squared boss at the elbow where the two arms meet. It is pure carved movement: smooth, deep, sculptural rounds with no flat filler. Designed to dress a corner, it is ideal for the top corners of door and window casings, mirror and picture frames, headboards, cabinet doors or the shoulders of an archway. Cut it as a handed pair and you can frame both sides of an opening symmetrically. Cutting notes • Deep, rounded relief — this wants a ball-nose roughing pass followed by a fine tapered ball finishing pass to keep the scroll cores crisp. • Mirror the model to produce matching left- and right-hand corners. • Cut as a thin-backed appliqué and glue in place, or carve directly into the workpiece. • Break the sharp scroll edges lightly before finishing; the curls take gilding, paint or a dark wax beautifully.
