Baroque Rope-Column Frame Relief

Baroque grandeur, ready for the router. This is an ornate rectangular frame relief in full old-world dress. Twisted rope columns run up both sides like carved barley-sugar pilasters; across the top and bottom, billowing acanthus leaves scroll outward from a central palmette crest, softening the inner opening with graceful curves. The whole thing is bordered by a crisp band of dentil — tooth-like blocks that give the outer edge its classical rhythm. The central panel is left open, a window waiting for a mirror, a canvas or a treasured photograph. It's built as a deep-relief model squarely aimed at CNC carving, though it prints beautifully as decor too. Working it: • On the CNC: a roughing pass with a flat end mill, then a tapered ball-nose for the leaf veins, rope twists and dentil teeth. Basswood, tulipwood or MDF all machine cleanly. • Mind the undercuts on the deepest scrollwork — a 3-axis machine will flatten a little, so a v-bit finishing pass helps sharpen the recesses. • 3D printing instead? Lay it face-up and flat; no supports needed for the relief surface. • Finish with a walnut stain and a dry-brushed gilt or cream to lift the leaf tips, or paint it antique gold for a genuinely opulent frame.
