Spread-Wing Palmette Onlay

A pair of sweeping wings rising from a central spear — a heraldic ornament with real lift. This vertical onlay is built on symmetry. From a knotted base of interlocking scrolls, two large feathered wings spread upward and outward, each rank of plumes carved in smooth, layered relief. Between them stands a central shaft — a turned bead capped by a small leafed finial that points to the top like a spear tip. Below, twin volutes curl inward around a little pendant drop, grounding the whole composition. It has the feel of an anthemion or an eagle-wing crest from classical and Empire-style furniture. It makes a striking centrepiece: mount it on a clock case, a headboard, a cabinet door, a fireplace overmantel, or use it as a heraldic-style plaque in its own right. The bold wing forms suit gilding, bronze-effect paint, or a simple oiled hardwood. Print / cut notes • Orient the relief face-up (or face-down flat for 3D printing) — the back is flat for gluing onto a panel. • CNC: the feather channels and the deep gap either side of the central shaft need a slim tapered ball-nose; rough first, then a fine finishing pass to clean the undercuts between plumes. • Watch the finial tip and the scroll ends — leave holding tabs so they survive the cut. • Resin or a fine FDM layer height keeps each feather edge distinct; a light sand along the plumes before painting gives a smooth, carved sheen.
